Abstract: Metadiscourse is an important and indispensible language form employed to construct texts, express authors’attitude, and to realize reader-writer interaction in discourses. In this research,we took Hyland’s Interpersonal Model of metadiscourse as the theoretical framework to contrastively study how metadiscourse is applied and whether there exist any differences in the application in English and Chinese academic texts, from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives. We took abstracts of petroleum academic papers as the research subjects and built two small corpora by collecting 90 English abstracts from three SCI-indexed journals and 90 Chinese abstracts from three core journals in China. We found that metadiscourse is universal in both English and Chinese abstracts: authors from either language adopt various metadiscourse devices to actualize their interactive as well as interactional purposes. And there exist significant differences in both frequency and linguistic forms between English and Chinese metadiscourse resources, and significantly more metadiscourse devices are used in English abstracts. These differences may result from three factors: different language features, the influences of culture on language and different academic writing traditions.
